Gutters only work if the downspouts do. We size, place and pitch them so roof water ends up in the yard instead of against your foundation.
Why Downspouts Matter
A perfectly installed gutter still floods your foundation if the downspouts are too few, too small, or dumping right at the wall. Most of the water problems we get called about are downspout problems, not gutter problems.
What Goes Wrong
Water spilling at gutter ends usually means it can't drain fast enough through the downspout.
A trench or washed-out mulch under a downspout means it's discharging too close to the house.
Water at the foundation is far more often a downspout issue than a gutter issue.
Undersized or clogged downspouts freeze first and back water up into the gutter.
Downspout Installation FAQ
A good rule is one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter run, adjusted for roof area and pitch. Long runs, steep roofs and large surfaces need more. We calculate it from your actual roof rather than guessing.
Most homes here have 2"x3" downspouts, which are undersized for larger roofs. A 3"x4" downspout carries roughly twice the water. If you have chronic overflow, upsizing is often cheaper than any other fix.
Yes. Adding an outlet and a new downspout to an existing gutter run is a common, affordable job and often solves overflow on its own.
At least four to six feet, further if the ground slopes back toward the foundation. We install extensions, splash blocks or buried drainage depending on your grade.
Yes, where it makes sense. If your grade works against you, tying downspouts into buried drain line moving water to a lower point is often the only permanent fix.
